The Frontier Country

The Frontier Country Region

The area inland from the Sunshine Coast is known as Frontier Country. In the 1800s, this area was the centre of the bitter conflict between the isiXhosa, the Afrikaaner and the British. Between 1779 and 1878 there were nine frontier wars. The forts built in this time can still be seen and provide a chilling reminder of the bloody past.

The scenery and vegetation vary dramatically in Frontier Country and this makes it an ideal place for game viewing. Early British Settler recorded seeing elephants roaming the valley bush and hearing lions roar in the night. Thanks to the efforts of Abo Shamani Wildlife Ranch and its fellow game reserves, this is once again happening in Frontier Country.
